Biosafety is an integrated part of HSW at UQ, and it is important that all staff and students appreciate the potential health risks of using biohazardous materials in the workplace. Biosafety looks after permits and approvals relating to biological materials under the regulatory requirements and includes:

• biosecurity
• genetic manipulation of materials
• high-risk biologicals or potentially hazardous biologicals
• Security Sensitive Biological Agents
• pest plants
• Defense Trade Control
• collections related to native flora and fauna
• work relating to animal and human ethics.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) ensures compliance with legislation, regulations and standards relating to biosafety and biosecurity.

The University Boating and Diving Advisor is responsible for ensuring all UQ divers are adequately qualified, trained, equipped and supervised.

The Ergonomics and Rehabilitation Advisor oversees the UQ Musculoskeletal Disorders Strategy and is responsible for its development, implementation and evaluation.

Occupational Health Nurse Advisors aim to promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social wellbeing of workers in all occupations by:

• preventing health issues
• controlling risks
• tailoring work to the person in the position.

• health monitoring
• hearing protection and testing
• immunisation.

Occupational Hygiene Advisors can provide assistance in recognising, evaluating and controlling workplace hazards encountered in the University environment. Common issues Occupational Hygiene Advisors provide assistance with are:

• indoor air quality
• hazardous chemicals
• ventilation
• asbestos, and toxic and nuisance dust
• noise measurement and personal noise exposure monitoring
• physical environment assessment (for example, heat and lighting).

The Radiation Protection Advisor's role is to train, implement and monitor forms of radiation and associated equipment around UQ and related sites. This includes:

• providing specialist advice
• ensuring compliance with legislation
• monitoring projects and researchers to ensure a high standard of radiation safety.
