Read&Write provides a range of tools to support accessibility, learning, and productivity:

• Text-to-speech for web pages, PDFs, and documents
• Dictation (speech-to-text) for hands-free writing
• Word prediction to support spelling and writing flow
• Dictionary and picture dictionary for comprehension
• Study tools, including highlighting, notes, and vocabulary lists
• Screen masking and reading guides to improve focus
• Audio maker to convert text into audio files

Read&Write is designed to support a wide range of learning and working styles and is suitable for all users.

Microsoft Edge

1. Open Microsoft Edge
2. Go to the Edge Add-ons store
3. Search for “Read&Write” by Everway
4. Click Get and confirm installation
5. Open the UQ website or visit word.new
6. Click the Extensions (puzzle icon) in the toolbar
7. Select Read&Write
8. Select Sign in with Microsoft
9. Enter your UQ username and password

Optional: Show the extension in the toolbar

1. Select the Extensions (puzzle icon) in the toolbar
2. Find Read&Write
3. Click Show in toolbar (eye/pin icon)

If you can’t find the extension

• Go to Extensions (puzzle icon) and then click Manage extensions
• Ensure Read&Write is turned on

Google Chrome

1. Open Google Chrome
2. Go to the Chrome Web Store
3. Search for “Read&Write” by Everway
4. Click Add to Chrome then Add extension
5. Open the UQ website or visit word.new
6. Click the Extensions (puzzle icon) in the toolbar
7. Select Read&Write
8. Select Sign in with Microsoft - if you don’t see this it’s likely you are using a personal profile - refer to the steps below to ensure you continue to access the premium tools 
9. Sign in using your UQ username and password

Optional: Show the extension in the toolbar

1. Select the Extensions (puzzle icon) in the toolbar
2. Find Read&Write
3. Click the pin icon

If you can’t find the extension

• Go to Extensions (puzzle icon) and then click Manage extensions
• Ensure Read&Write is enabled

Using a personal profile on browser? That’s okay

You can install Read&Write while the browser signed into a personal account. To use your UQ licence and enjoy premium features:

1. Open Settings (⋯) in the Read&Write toolbar and select Accounts
2. Select Switch User
3. Select Sign in with Microsoft
4. Sign in using your UQ username and password

Windows

For personal devices

1. Download Read&Write for Windows from the official Everway website
2. Open the installer and follow the on-screen prompts
3. Launch Read&Write from the Start menu
4. Select Sign in with Microsoft
5. Enter your UQ username and password
6. You’ll be prompted to add the Support for Read&Write Desktop Extension to your default browser - this is needed to be able to use the Read&Write software when accessing any web based content

For UQ-managed devices

1. Open Company Portal
2. Search for Read&Write
3. Select Install
4. Launch the application
5. Select Sign in with Microsoft
6. Enter your UQ username and password

Mac

For personal devices

1. Download Read&Write for Mac from the official Everway website
2. Open the downloaded file
3. Move Read&Write to the Applications folder (if prompted)
4. Open Read&Write from Applications
5. Select Sign in with Microsoft
6. Enter your UQ username and password
7. If Chrome or Edge is your default browser You’ll be prompted to add the Support for Read&Write Desktop Extension to your default browser - this is needed to be able to use the Read&Write software when accessing any web based content

For UQ-managed devices

1. Open Self Service
2. Search for Read&Write
3. Select Install
4. Open the application
5. Select Sign in with Microsoft
6. Enter your UQ username and password
7. If Chrome or Edge is your default browser You’ll be prompted to add the Support for Read&Write Desktop Extension to your default browser - this is needed to be able to use the Read&Write software when accessing any web based content

1. Open the App Store
2. Search for “Read&Write” by Everway
3. Tap Get and install the app
4. Open the app

1. Open the Google Play Store
2. Search for “Read&Write” by Everway
3. Tap Install
4. Open the app
5. Select Sign in with Microsoft
6. Enter your UQ username and password

Can I use Read&Write in assessments?

This depends on your UQ assessment rules. For students with Learning Access Plans, some features (e.g., text-to-speech) may be permitted. Check your course profile, exam instructions, or speak with your course coordinator. 

Can I use it on multiple devices?

Yes. You can install Read&Write on both personal and UQ‑managed devices and sign in with your UQ account.

Does it work offline?

Some desktop features work offline after initial sign‑in.
Browser‑based and cloud features require an internet connection.

Is Read&Write only for students/staff with a disability?

No. Read&Write is available to everyone and supports a wide range of learning and study needs.

What should I do if something isn’t working?

Privacy and Data Handling: 

• Sign-in uses University single sign-on (no separate account needed). 
• Only basic usage data is collected (e.g., feature usage, device type). 
• Read&Write does not store document or assignment content unless you choose to upload it for a specific feature. 
• Data is stored on secure Everway-managed servers in compliance with University privacy requirements. See UQ’s privacy page and Everway’s data privacy page for more information.

Accessibility: 

• Read&Write is designed to support diverse learners and works with common assistive technologies. 
• The product aligns with WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility requirements. 

License and Terms: 

• Free access for all staff and students during the 2026 pilot. 
• Licensed for installation on personal or University-managed devices.
• Users are expected to follow the UQ’s Acceptable Use of ICT guidelines and the Read&Write service terms provided by Everway.
