The new UQ Fitness and Wellness Centre is earmarked to be located on the existing tennis pavilion, along with basketball and tennis court sites on Blair Drive, adjacent to Saint Lucy’s Café.

The proposed UQ Fitness and Wellness Centre will be a state-of-the-art facility where UQ students and staff, practitioners, clients and the local community participate in mind and body health, fitness, and wellness experiences.

The current centre has reached capacity in terms of space and does not suit the needs of students and staff. The existing building does not cater to people with a disability, lacks the flexibility to adapt to different purposes and is uneconomical to refurbish.

A new fitness facility will provide the potential for sport and recreation to improve student participation on-campus. This aligns with Goal 4 of the UQ Student Strategy.

The project team is working on a final business case to present to the University Senate for approval in early December. If approved, the Senate will then commit to the construction. Development would begin in early January 2020.
